Stephen J. Makuta

Born: 3/27/1925 - Died: 3/25/2017

Stephen J. Makuta, 91 of Curtisville, West Deer Township, passed away, Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Platinum Ridge Center for Rehabilitation, Brackenridge. Stephen was born in Curtisville, March 27, 1925, to the late Michael and Mary (Kustick) Makuta. He has been a resident of Curtisville all of his life. Stephen was a Corporal in the US Army during WWII. He was assigned to the 85th Chemical Mortar Battalion fighting battles in New Guinea and the Philippines. Stephen received the Purple Heart for wounds in battle. After serving his Nation in WWII, Steve worked as a coal miner for Ford Collieries, then worked for a building contractor, Penn DOT, and Deer Lakes School District, before finally retiring. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an expert in growing all types of tomatoes. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Anna (Maccagnan) Makuta ; children, Veronica Schubert of Marine, Illinois and Ron (Jane) Makuta of Virginia Beach, Virginia; grandchildren, Julie (Jeffrey) Patterson, Douglas, Aleata and Rose Makuta; great grandchildren, Alexandria, Shawna, Isabella and Jeffrey; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Mary Filo, Mike, Helen, John, Theresa, Joe and Andy Makuta. All are welcomed to attend a Christian Funeral Mass, 10 am, Wednesday, March 29th, 2017, at Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, Russellton, Pa 15076, with Rev. James P. Holland celebrant. Steve will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery, Frazer Township.
